It’s Nesting Season

This is the time of year here in New England when you need to keep an eye out for nesting insects. By that, I am referring to yellow jackets, hornets and wasps. They are on the lookout for, and locating, their winter home.

When you are outside keep an eye peeled for them. Check the grounds before cutting the lawn or doing any type of yard work. Although there may have been nothing the last time you did so, it may now be occupied. If you see something fly by, follow with your eye where it goes. If you see one enter a hole in the ground, or underneath a shingle on your house, you most likely will see others.

If you do see activity, stay well enough away and contact a Pest Control expert. Or if you are like me, wait until nighttime (never daytime…they always have scouts guarding the nest), and hit them with a long-range insecticide. Spray the front entrance to the nest and soak it well to ensure complete elimination.

Please only do that yourself if you have before. You don’t want to get it wrong and end up swarmed by angry jackets or hornets! Although they may be beneficial if out of the way of people, having them nesting near the home, or in a heavily trafficked area, is not safe.

If you are going to be away from home for a while, let Eagle Eye Home Watch keep an eye on your property. We will check around the yard to make sure there are no surprise nests when you return!

Have a happy Fall and a Happy Halloween!
